Chamonix
The entire Chamonix valley spectacularly set below Mont Blanc is heaven for those who love mountains with awesome views. Unlike many alpine villages, Chamonix comes alive in summer with bustling streets filled with visitors from all over the world.
The choice of really good restaurants is immense with a choice from Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Italian to the ubiquitous Specialities Savoyardes - Raclette, pierrade etc. Chamonix completely changes character at night and becomes a sophisticated town with a brilliant nightlife, with its own elegant casino, with lots of bars, clubs and Discos.
However, in just a few steps in any direction and you enter the tranquillity of the mountains... This is stunning walking country with clear, clean air, pine forests, gleaming glaciers and soaring peaks. Lightweight boots and shorts are usually sufficient as basic walking ware. But waterproofs are essential and trekking poles useful if you going to walk the high trails. Don't forget sunglasses and high altitude skin and lip protection.

Walks are well signposted and accessible either from the valley floor or by cable car. Beware of patches of old snow, especially early in the season. Ensure you check local information and speak to a professional guide if you intend to take one of the serious alpine routes. In some instances an ice-axe and crampons may be necessary
